On the hills of Lucca, enjoying stunning views of the surrounding countryside, La Cantina is part of a large estate that produces local wine, honey and olive oil.
La Cantina has recently been restored using traditional Tuscan materials, retaining the character of the old farmhouse while offering total comfort. The interiors have been furnished in an attractively simple country style, and the ground floor living area features exposed brick and wooden beams in keeping with the age of the property. Downstairs there is also a rustic kitchen and dining room, as well as a shower room and laundry room. On the first floor you’ll find a large sitting room with vaulted ceilings and a fireplace, highlighting the character of the original structure. There are three bedrooms on the first floor, a master bedroom with an en suite featuring a bath and separate shower, and two en suite twin bedrooms. The property sits in extensive fenced gardens of lawns and olive trees which surround the thoroughly modern private swimming pool, boasting views across the countryside. There is an appealing pergola in the tree-filled gardens, perfect for an al fresco dinner cooked on the built-in barbecue.

Although they are only 17km apart, Pisa and Lucca instantly feel like different worlds. The former is a lively student city on the River Arno, and has one of the world’s most recognizable monuments: the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Understated Lucca is compact and genteel, ideal for a Tuscany villa nearby, with handsome piazzas that frame churches in the Luccan-Romanesque style. Those on a Lunigiana holiday occupy the Apennine foothills in far north-western Tuscany. It is rolling, blissfully empty terrain whose few inhabitants have cultural links with neighbouring Liguria.
