About the villa
A high wall protects the entry to this stylish house, with a rather grand archway leading through to its lovely courtyard and cloistered terrace, and huge cascades of bright bougainvillea cloaking the single storey building. In the grounds, olive trees and herb beds add scent and shade to sunny lawns surrounding the swimming pool, and outdoor living is easy with a leafy dining pergola overlooking the pool, a barbecue and pizza oven, a big pergola by the olive grove with seating for sundowners and relaxation, and a colonnaded pathway to a bocce court among the trees. Close to the private tennis court, a modern annexe has been built in traditional trullo style, encircled by a terrace with its own gazebo seating, and offering perfect privacy for two with an elegant double bedroom. In the main house, a large dining kitchen is linked through arches to a chic sitting room with a fireplace, barrel-vaulted ceiling, and double doors out to the garden. The spacious master suite is one of three double bedrooms, each with en suite bath or shower room, and there is a cheerfully furnished triple room for children. Just 6km from Martano, the villa is within 12km of the nearest beach.

If a building can be a symbol for a whole region, then the trullo stands for Puglia—also known as ‘Apulia’ in English. Think of a Puglia villa holiday and those round, whitewashed limestone buildings with their comical, conical roofs always spring to mind. But there’s more to the region that is the narrow heel of Italy’s boot than trullo country around Alberobello. Discover baroque beauty in Lecce, Emperor Frederick II’s mysterious architecture at the Castel del Monte, and total relaxation on a Puglia villa stay in a rural Masseria.
