Things to do in Montenegro

Step into the past

Montenegro is steeped in history, and home to a range of historic locations worth visiting. The old town of Kotor, widely recognised for its UNESCO World Heritage status, provides wonderful insight into the town’s past. Made up of narrow cobbled streets, outstanding shops and restaurants, and fabulous architecture all around, the old town is a must-visit for those in the area. Further enhance your stay by climbing the ancient city walls on a clear day, relishing in the peace of unparalleled views overlooking Boka Bay and the town itself. The nearby town of Herceg Novi, just an hour away by car, offers visitors a similar experience with the addition of an idyllic seaside promenade. The historic coastal town of Budva is another excellent option for those seeking a glimpse into the past, recognised primarily for its vibrant nightlife, beautiful beaches and charming old town.

Discover incredible views

After a day spent exploring Montenegro’s wild beauty, the Adriatic coastline is the perfect place to unwind. From the historic charm of Budva to the serene waters of Boka Bay, this stretch of coast is home to some of the country’s most picturesque settings. Our villas with private pools here offer an ideal blend of privacy and coastal living, whether tucked into the hills with sweeping views or just steps from the sea. Enjoy sunny days by your own pool, relaxed evenings on the terrace, and easy access to charming local towns, beaches, and waterfront restaurants. It’s the perfect base for a truly restorative Montenegrin escape.

Explore vibrant coastal towns

Our beach villas are another excellent way to explore the rich natural beauty of Montenegro. Whilst many areas in Boka Bay have their own views of the bay, a boat tour around the bay itself can provide visitors with a new, wider perspective on the area, showcasing the truly immense scale of the surrounding mountains. The coastal island of Sveti Stefan in Budva is another great option to visit by boat, featuring a charming mediaeval village which was recently transformed into a luxury resort. If you’d rather take things slow along the Adriatic coast, visit Jaz Beach, Mogren Beach, or Queen’s Beach. The latter of these was named so due to Milena Petrović’s love for the area, former queen of Montenegro, who ruled during the end of the nineteenth century. The waters here are crystal-clear, serene and indulgently inviting.

Eating and drinking in Montenegro

Drawing inspiration from Mediterranean, Italian, Turkish and Balkan culinary influences, Montenegrin cuisine promises a rich array of delicious flavours and unique dishes, both sweet and savoury. With many parts of the country located along the coast, seafood often forms a large part of the local diet, from shellfish to octopus, usually prepared over an open flame with local herbs and olive oil. Similarly, grilled meats are always popular with the locals, with lamb, pork and veal forming the basis of many traditional Montenegrin dishes alongside plenty of herbs and spices. Other popular traditional dishes from Montenegro include ćevapi (grilled minced meat), kačamak (a maize porridge), priganice (deep-fried dough) and a wide range of savoury cheese, meat or vegetable-filled pies. The country is also known for its dairy products, particularly its cheeses, including the famous njeguški sir (smoked cheese) and kajmak, a creamy dairy spread used in many traditional dishes. This stems from the fact that cattle breeding has a long history in the most rural and mountainous parts of the country. As for the drinking culture in Montenegro, the national alcoholic beverage is rajika, a strong fruity brandy that’s often enjoyed neat. Coffee is another popular drink here, usually served the Turkish way with unfiltered grounds.

When to go to Montenegro

One of the best times to travel to Montenegro is during the summer months, particularly from June to August, when the weather is at its most favourable for outdoor activities and coastal exploration. The warm Mediterranean climate during this period ensures pleasant temperatures, typically ranging from 25 to 30 degrees, making it ideal for activities like beach excursions, water sports, and leisurely strolls through picturesque towns. However, it's important to note that this is also the peak tourist season, which results in larger crowds and higher accommodation rates. For visitors seeking a more tranquil and serene experience, the shoulder seasons of spring and early autumn present appealing alternatives. During these times, the temperatures are milder, ranging from 18 to 24 degrees, and the tourist crowds are less dense, allowing for a more leisurely exploration of Montenegro's natural beauty and cultural attractions.
