Things to do in Boka Bay

Unravel the region's history

Boka Bay, also known as the Bay of Kotor, is bursting with wonder, offering a range of historic sites for visitors to explore. Beach villas along the bay provide a perfect base to soak up the stunning surroundings. Immerse yourself in maritime history at the Nautical Museum of Montenegro, located in the town, and uncover the region's rich maritime heritage, or discover the charming town of Perast, known for its well-preserved Baroque architecture. On a clear day, travel by boat to the islet of St. George, where you’ll find the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, surrounded by incredible views of the mountains from the fjord-like bay. Spend a day wandering the narrow cobbled streets, hidden squares, and mediaeval architecture in the Old Town, while marvelling at historic landmarks such as the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, with wonderfully preserved interiors and just a three euro entry fee. The ancient city walls are another essential part of any trip to Kotor, presenting spectacular views over Boka Bay from a unique perspective. The two to three hour hike presents a challenge for those willing to put in the work, but the reward of unobstructed views whilst on the way up more than makes up for the effort invested.

Take in the sights

Whilst a rewarding climb of the city walls is one way to guarantee panoramic views over the bay and surrounding mountains, it’s certainly not the only option for visitors of Boka Bay. Just a few kilometres east of the bay sits Lovćen National Park, overflowing with over six thousand acres of dramatic natural scenery. The majestic mountains rival one another in height, with Stirovnik reaching an impressive peak of 1,749 metres above sea level. Whilst the peak here is inaccessible to the public, Jezerski Vrh sits around 100 metres lower, making it the second tallest mountain in the area, and the highest with an accessible peak. Here, visitors can enjoy remarkable views whilst heading towards the mausoleum of Petar II Petrović-Njegoš, perched high upon the mountain, at the 460 step mark. For a similar experience, embark on a hike along the Vrmac Ridge to enjoy panoramic vistas over Boka Bay, exploring historic forts and villages along the way.

Head out on a boat trip

The Church of Our Lady of the Rocks is just one of many places around Boka Bay worth visiting by boat. Nestled peacefully on an islet that features a museum alongside the church, both attractions are rich in local folklore and history. Experience more of the beauty of Boka Bay aboard a boat tour, allowing you to admire the stunning fjord-like landscapes and visit nearby coastal attractions. For a rich blend of history, natural beauty and culture, the coastal town of Herceg Novi, renowned for its historic fortresses, botanical gardens, and the charming Španjola Fortress, offers captivating views of the bay. Whether you’re more inclined to spend a day on the beach, or would rather ride the waves and head out on a boat, Boka Bay is a truly idyllic location within easy reach of nearby towns, home to a wide array of incredible possibilities.

Food and drink

Offering traditional Montenegrin cuisine and local specialties, there’s a wide range of bars and restaurants in Boka Bay for visitors to explore during their stay. Whether you’re strictly dining for taste, or you’re looking for dinner with a view, there are options for everybody. The atmosphere in Bokafina Restaurant is just one example of dining in a truly idyllic location, where you’ll indulge your senses in the Bay of Kotor, at the foot of an awe-inspiring thirty kilometre long fjord-like bay. Most restaurants in the area offer seafood as a menu option, but Catovica Mlini in Boka Bay is known by many as one of the best seafood restaurants in the whole of Montenegro. Mudra Art Cuisine at Huma Bay Hotel is a similarly excellent option for those looking for a fine dining experience. Just a few minutes away from the Old Town on foot, Galion is another incredible option with views from the foot of the mountains, perfect for those seeking a rich blend of modern and traditional touches. For something a little different, Storia di Petra offers top of the range meals from an elevated mountainside position, offering a fresh perspective on the local scenery. The region is also home to a range of popular local drinks, including rajika, a strong fruity brandy popular all through the country, and Vranac, a subtle red wine made with locally sourced grapes.

When to go to Boka Bay

Boka Bay is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is at its most inviting for enjoying the beautiful coastal region. With warm temperatures ranging from 25 to 30 degrees, this period is ideal for indulging in outdoor activities such as heading out on a yacht, sailing, and exploring the intricacies of charming coastal towns. It's important to note that this time of year tends to attract a larger influx of tourists, resulting in a livelier atmosphere, but potentially larger crowds. For those seeking a more tranquil experience, the shoulder seasons of spring and early autumn offer milder temperatures, ranging from 18 to 24 degrees, and fewer tourists, providing an opportunity to savor the beauty of Boka Bay in a quieter and more relaxed setting. Whether basking in the lively summer ambiance or embracing the peaceful charm of the shoulder seasons, Boka Bay offers an enchanting escape throughout the year.
