About the villa

Set high in the forested hills above historic Cortona, this enchanting former farmhouse is surrounded by two hundred hectares of its own land, where a woodland walk leads to breathtaking vistas of Lake Trasimeno. The old stone house and its two little cottages nestle in tranquil gardens, with drifts of lavender lining a pathway to the swimming pool terrace, perfectly placed for haunting views of heat hazed mountain peaks. A poolside gazebo makes a relaxing al fresco sitting room, complemented by a pergola dining terrace beside the house, while the villa itself is beautifully restored and brimming with character. Ancient beams and rafters now look down on colourful rugs and cushions, comfy sofas in cool toned blue and white, antiques and unique artefacts. Rustic chic bedrooms feature hand-painted furniture, a big timber sleigh bed and romantic four-poster, and bathrooms are replete with Tuscan stone sinks and free-standing bathtubs. Very popular for gatherings of family or friends, the villa is 3km from shops in Montenare, 15km from Cortona and 30km from water sports on Trasimeno.

"We have just returned from the most fantastic week at Poggio dei Castagni.... I just wanted to thank you personally for your help in booking so efficiently. It was one of the best weeks we have ever had, could not have been more delightful.

"This was planned as a special celebration for our 40th wedding anniversary and we couldn't have chosen a better spot. The whole thing was delightful, effortless and extremeley conducive to the best and happiest of family occasions. We all agreed it was one of the nicest weeks of our lives!" "The farmhouse, pool area and gardens were enchanting and suited us perfectly in every way, and it was beautifully set up in terms of relaxation and lifestyle. The kitchen and BBQ were very conducive to self-catering, and the local shopkeepers, both in the little supermarket in Pergo and the butcher and bakery in Mercatale were so friendly. Local restaurants were nice, and they even had a 'senza glutine' one called La Tufa in Ossaia, to cater for one of our group! The cleaner, Debbie, was English, and a very handy source of local knowledge as well as being a lovely person, so I hope you can pass this on, and we also received messages or visits from the rep and property manager to check that we were having a good time. We are definitely planning another CV villas Italy trip next year.....just debating whether or not to try a different region, as it is tempting to go straight back to Poggio dei Castagni! We REALLY loved our holiday, and are very impressed by your company, so please convey our compliments."

About the area

Val d'Orcia & near Cortona

Average weather

The rolling, strangely haunting scenery of the Val d’Orcia is the backdrop to many a Renaissance painting. Its cypress-studded ridges form one of the iconic modern images of ‘classic Tuscany’. The towns are a delight for architecture buffs: the Renaissance palaces of Montepulciano and Pienza; the Romanesque Collegiata in San Quirico d’Orcia, hewn entirely from honey-coloured travertine. Cortona clings to the side of a mountain overlooking the Valdichiana, looking out to Lake Trasimeno and neighbouring Umbria.
