About the villa
Set in a seven hectare farm of grapevines and artichokes, this lovely old ‘baglio’ is built, in typically Sicilian style, around a cobbled courtyard, liberally sprinkled with flowering shrubs and hemmed with a covered dining terrace and pergola shaded verandas. Just behind the courtyard, with open views of coast and countryside, a separate sunny terrace surrounds the private pool, with loungers on its poolside lawns and tree shade for sundowner seating. And the ultra-relaxing tempo continues within the wonderfully comfy house, where original architectural features form the framework for bold artworks, bright cushions piled on big sofas, bedrooms in simple country style, and smart modern bathrooms. An ideal house for a family gathering or couples travelling together, perhaps with some children in cots. Baglio del Vigneto consists of three buildings. The main house has a charming kitchen, the quirky elegant dining room, a large living room with an open fire, and one of the en suite bedrooms. Across a small inner courtyard, three bedrooms occupy a second building. And the pool annexe has a double room spacious enough for a cot. The pool is set in a south facing terrace with some trees. This is an extraordinarily beautiful, quiet and unspoilt corner of southern Europe with superb inexpensive restaurants and glorious sandy beaches within easy driving distance. The villa is 5km from shops in Menfi and 11km from sandy Portopaolo beach and within easy reach of other beaches. Highly recommended.

While still having a rich Italian heritage in food, history and culture, the west of Sicily has a noticeable African influence. Even with this, this area is still famous for an Italian tradition – winemaking – and is the home of the sweet desert wine, Marsala. The nightlife is something to experience, with family run restaurants popping up on the streets in the evening, showcasing a menu of freshly caught seafood, and other local dishes. But don’t forget about the days. Whatever interests you, there is something to see - from thermal baths and beaches to island trips and historical monuments.
