Our view

A 14th century tower, converted with flair, this family villa in Tuscany would also make an indulgent choice just for two. It’s perfectly private, yet just a stroll from picturesque Cetona.

In brief

  • Characterful restoration
  • Private pool
  • Walk to shops

About the villa

With gorgeous rural views, which get better with each flight of stairs, La Torre looks down over grassy slopes and terraces, sprinkled with trees and forming a cushion of peaceful privacy. A long flight of stone steps lead down from the villa to a lovely pool and poolside pergola, set amid lawns and screened in greenery for a sense of seclusion. But in fact, the tower house is just five hundred metres from shops and trattoria in Cetona’s cobbled streets, its vine-shaded terrace furnished for al fresco dining, with the medieval Citta della Pieve framed in an enchanting backdrop. From the terrace, doors lead in to a country kitchen and delightful living room, designed with arty rusticity and bright with kilims, cushions and pictures. The Tower is on 4 levels, and there is one spacious bedroom on each of the floors above, all simply furnished with a touch of romance. Ideal for a group of friends or for families with older children, La Torre could be booked together with an adjacent property, La Torretta, to accommodate additional guests in a fully self-contained villa for two.

About the area

Val d'Orcia & near Cortona

Average weather

The rolling, strangely haunting scenery of the Val d’Orcia is the backdrop to many a Renaissance painting. Its cypress-studded ridges form one of the iconic modern images of ‘classic Tuscany’. The towns are a delight for architecture buffs: the Renaissance palaces of Montepulciano and Pienza; the Romanesque Collegiata in San Quirico d’Orcia, hewn entirely from honey-coloured travertine. Cortona clings to the side of a mountain overlooking the Valdichiana, looking out to Lake Trasimeno and neighbouring Umbria.
