Family holidays are some of life's greatest pleasures. They help children build confidence, experience new cultures and create memories that last a lifetime. But travelling with children isn't always plain sailing. From unfamiliar surroundings to disrupted routines, even the most exciting holiday can sometimes lead to the occasional meltdown. That's why we partnered with children's psychotherapist and emotional wellbeing author Becky Goddard-Hill to discover which destinations are most likely to help families with young children enjoy a calmer, more relaxed holiday experience.

After analysing almost 100 European destinations across factors including tourist density, travel time, climate and food familiarity, we created a unique Temper-Free Score, and here's what we found.

Croatia: Europe's Most Temper-Free Destination

Croatia was the clear winner in our rankings, claiming four places in the top 10 and the top two spots overall. Leading the way was Hvar, which achieved an impressive Temper-Free Score of 89.1/100. While it's often associated with glamorous yachts and lively waterfront restaurants, families tend to discover a very different side of the island. Lavender-covered hills, crystal-clear swimming spots and traffic-free historic centres create an atmosphere that's surprisingly easy to explore with children in tow.

As one of Europe's sunniest destinations, with more than 2,700 hours of sunshine each year, Hvar offers plenty of opportunities for beach days, boat trips and outdoor adventures without constantly checking the weather forecast.

Just behind Hvar was Korčula, one of Croatia's lesser-known island gems. Covering just 276 square kilometres, it's small enough to feel manageable while still offering plenty of quiet beaches, family-run restaurants and fascinating history. With charming medieval streets that are largely pedestrianised, it's particularly easy to explore with younger children. Meanwhile, Split and Dubrovnik also secured places in the top six. While city breaks aren't always an obvious choice for families, these coastal cities offer a balance of culture, walkable old towns and easy beach access that can make travelling with children feel surprisingly straightforward.

Greece Proves the Power of a Slower Pace

While Croatia took the crown, Greece was the most represented country overall, with seven destinations featuring in the top 20. The highest-ranking Greek destination was Skiathos, which scored 78.9/100. Famous for its pine forests that stretch right down to the sea, the island combines a relaxed atmosphere with plenty to keep children entertained. With more than 60 beaches, families can find everything from sheltered coves perfect for paddling to snorkelling spots that feel like mini adventures.

Lefkada was another standout performer. Although it's an island, it's connected to mainland Greece by a bridge, making arrivals and departures much simpler for families who would rather avoid a ferry journey after a flight. Add in turquoise beaches and a laid-back atmosphere, and it's no surprise it scored so highly.

Elsewhere, Corfu, Zakynthos and Crete all featured in the rankings, reinforcing what many families already know: Greece has a natural talent for helping visitors slow down. Long lunches, welcoming tavernas and unhurried beach days create exactly the kind of relaxed atmosphere that helps the whole family unwind.

Italy and Portugal Continue to Impress

Italy also performed strongly, with Perugia, Siena and Cagliari all appearing in the top 20. What makes Italy such a reliable choice for families is hardly a mystery. Familiar cuisine, welcoming locals and a culture that naturally revolves around family life help children feel comfortable from the moment they arrive.

Whether you're exploring the countryside of Tuscany, the coast of Puglia or the beaches of Sardinia, villa holidays allow families to enjoy Italy at their own pace.

Portugal also secured two of the highest-ranking destinations overall, with Faro and Lagos taking third and fourth place respectively. Combined with relatively short flight times from much of Europe, the Algarve remains one of the easiest destinations for families travelling with younger children.

What Makes a Destination More Temper-Free?

While every family is different, our analysis found that the highest-scoring destinations consistently shared several characteristics that reduce common travel stresses for children.

Destinations tended to score highly when they offered:

  • Comfortable summer temperatures
  • Less crowded surroundings
  • Shorter travel times
  • Familiar food options
  • A slower pace of life

As Becky explains "Children may be tired, thirsty, hungry, too hot or overwhelmed. Helping them feel comfortable and secure can make a huge difference to their holiday experience."

Choosing the Right Destination

No destination can guarantee a completely tantrum-free holiday, but choosing somewhere with the right balance of climate, atmosphere and family-friendly experiences can make all the difference. Whether that's a villa overlooking the sea in Hvar, a family retreat on Lefkada or a countryside escape in Tuscany, a little planning before you travel can go a long way towards creating a smoother, happier holiday for everyone.
