Kotica Miklovan

I’m Miklovan Kotica, or Mike as everyone calls me. I’m a Destination Expert of Crete, a charming gem where Venetian elegance meets sun-soaked beaches and the authentic Cretan soul. After years of exploring every corner of this stunning island, I’ve fallen in love with its rich history, vibrant food scene, and that magical light only found in the Aegean.

Describe the perfect day in your destination?

A perfect day in Chania begins with a peaceful morning coffee by the Venetian Harbor, followed by a stroll through the charming Old Town’s narrow alleys. Afterwards, relax on the stunning Elafonissi Beach, enjoying the crystal-clear waters. For lunch, savour fresh seafood at a seaside taverna. In the afternoon, hike through the scenic Samaria Gorge or explore a traditional mountain village. End the day with a sunset walk along Nea Chora Beach, followed by a delicious dinner overlooking the harbour, and a leisurely evening by the water.

What are your top travel tips for your destination?

Crete isn’t your average Greek island; it’s massive and driving from west to east can take more than 5 hours. My recommendation is to choose between 2 regions, Chania-Rethimno or Heraklion-Ierapetra

So, yes, Elafonisi, Seitan Limani, and Balos are stunning, there’s no disputing that. But I would say do not miss Aradena Gorge instead of the crowded Samaria Gorge. Loutro village is only reachable by boat or by hiking, and you will find no more than 50 local people living there. And finally, a must do is Knossos Palace and Archeological Museum for the Minoan history.

My last travel tip, and most importantly, is to skip the tourist traps and eat where the locals do. Do not be afraid of the mountain tavernas, you will be surprised how friendly and warm the people are there.

What local cuisine would you recommend to people staying in your destination?

Cretan cuisine. Fresh, simple, and full of flavours. Mediterranean cuisine is one of the best in the world, and because of its good food Crete has the longest life expectancy. The must-try Cretan food I would recommend are:

  • Dakos: a traditional meze or main dish. Fresh tomato and feta cheese on top of a barley rusk dipped in virgin olive oil.
  • Antikristo: Lamb or goat slow roasted on a spit, traditionally cooked by shepherds. Smoky, tender, primal. A must-try if you love meat.
  • Gamopilafo: A rich rice dish cooked in goat or lamb broth — creamy, comforting, and traditionally served at weddings.
  • Sea food: Try grilled octopus, marinated anchovies, and whole fish right on the coast — simple but next-level when it’s fresh from the Aegean.

What experiences would you recommend to our customers in your destination?

Crete is more than just stunning beaches — it’s packed with authentic, immersive experiences that give visitors a real taste of the island’s culture, nature, and spirit.

Join a Cretan cooking class, or a wine tasting as Crete is famous for local wineries.

Hire a personal chef and ask for fresh fish and refreshing salads. The combination of a good meal, a glass of wine and a lovely view of the Aegean Sea is just wow.

Rent a boat trip. Sail along the rugged coastline, swim in hidden coves, and enjoy quiet villages only reachable by sea.
