Travel FAQs

The EU Entry/Exit system is a new electronic system that will replace the physical stamping of passports when you go through passport control when arriving in and departing from your destination. It will register all entries and exits to and from the participating European countries, registering your movements every time you cross a border in or out of the EU/Schengen area.

The system will launch on October 12, 2025, coming in to full effect by 10th April 2026. It is not yet known when within the 6 month entry period each destination and airport will begin implementing the checks. Once the new system is live, when you go through passport control on your arrival to, and departure from your destination, you will need to have a photo of your face taken, and your fingerprints scanned as well as providing your passport.

The system applies to non-EU nationals entering the Schengen Area for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period). People of all ages will need to go through the EES checks, however children under 12 will not need to provide fingerprints but they will need to have a facial scan taken.

There is nothing that you need to do prior to travelling however please be aware that there may be longer waiting times on entry and exit of your holiday destination.

You can find out more about the new EES system at:

www.abta.com/eesandetias
https://travel-europe.europa.eu/ees
www.gov.uk/guidance/eu-entryexit-system

You currently do not need a visa to travel to the EU as a UK national. The EU will be introducing a visa, at the cost of 20€, valis for 3 years or until the expiration of your passport (whichever comes first), towards the end of 2026.

Please be aware that these visas will only able to be purchased through the following website: https://travel-europe.europa.eu/en/etias .

Be vigilant as there are several spam websites in operation and visas will not be required until at least the end of 2026. The CV Villas team will keep you informed when this is introduced.

Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in most countries. Some destinations (e.g. Schengen Area) require at least 3–6 months validity beyond your departure date. To travel to Europe, your passport must be less than ten years old before your departure date and must be valid for at least three months after your planned return date. Ensure your passport has blank pages for visas and entry stamps if required.

Specific passport requirements for non-EU countries can be found in the ‘Entry Requirements’ section of the Foreign Travel Advice pages on GOV.UK.

Some airlines offer facilities where you can check the validity of your passport for certain destinations, for example via the TUI site here.

If you discover that your passport is not valid for travel you can renew it online.

If you hold a non UK passport you should check your destination embassy pages for further advice.

Useful information on vaccinations for travel in general can be found via the the NHS Travel Vaccination Advice page. For destination specific information, consult either the TravelHealthPro website. If a vaccine is required, it is recommended that you book an appointment with your GP or a travel clinic at least 6–8 weeks before travel.

Please be aware that each child needs their own valid passport. If travelling without one or both parents, carry a notarised letter of consent. You can check destination-specific rules for minors via the gov.uk website. More information about travelling with children can be found here.

We highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance as soon as you have booked your holiday, in some destinations this is a requirement for entry.

Since Brexit, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is being replaced by the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC).

The GHIC only covers emergency or necessary healthcare in EU countries – and it doesn’t cover everything. It’s not a substitute for travel insurance. As a UK resident you can apply for a GHIC free of charge via this NHS website.

Why should you get travel insurance (please note this is policy dependent)?

  • It covers medical costs that GHIC doesn’t – like private treatment or getting you back home if needed
  • It can protect you if your trip is cancelled, delayed or disrupted
  • It can help cover lost luggage expenses and more

More information on travel insurance can be found here.

You need to take your Great Britain or Northern Ireland driving licence with you to drive abroad. Check yours is still valid and renew your driving licence online if it’s expired or about to expire.

You might need an international driving permit (IDP) to drive in some countries. You can check if you need an international driving permit (IDP) via this government website .

An IDP can be purchased in person, you can find our where to purchase these here.

Pets can still to travel from the UK to the EU following Brexit but the requirements for documents and health checks have changed unless your pet has a European pet passport.

If you wish to travel with your pet to the European Union, on a CV Villas holiday, we advise that you discuss your pet’s travel with your vet.

You can visit www.gov.uk/taking-your-pet-abroad/travelling-to-an-eu-country-or-northern-ireland for further information.

If you are not a UK resident, please check entry requirements for your pets via your own government website.

Your CV Villas Travel  Documentation will contain the information of your local staff including your CV Villas Destination Expert who is best placed to support you . We also operate a 24hour Duty Office should you be unable to contact anyone locally. This Duty Office can be contacted on : +44 (0)20 7261 5450 or +44 (0)7785 264266.
