Our view

Completely immersed in the countryside, yet just 15km from Florence, this luxury villa in Tuscany is a beautiful house, on a bucolic estate once belonging to the De’ Medici family.

In brief

  • Historic towns nearby
  • All bedrooms en suite
  • Minimalist and modern

About the villa

Walls completely cloaked in leafy greenery give this striking house a camouflage, allowing it to blend into its backdrop and become an integral part of the lush rural landscape. But the rustic exterior is itself a ruse, belying a truly stylish villa whose superbly restored interiors are furnished in cool creamy white, illuminated with subtle lighting, and fitted with contemporary appliances. A family tree in the entrance hall adds a decorative touch of individuality. Each of the five bedrooms enjoys excellent en suite facilities; the monochrome master suite is completed by an open fireplace. A very chic dining room adjoins the spacious sitting room, divided by archways and replete with big sofas, a large TV and easy chairs by the fire. This room runs the length of the house and opens out to the garden, where a private pool nestles amid lawns and flowering shrubs, adjoined by a poolside dining terrace. Available year-round, La Crivellina stands a strollable 1km from shops and a restaurant in Malmantile, and a five minute drive from Lastra for the train to the heart of Florence. The coast is less than an hour away.

About the area

Florence

Average weather

The hills south of Florence, known as the Chianti, look like most people’s idea of ‘classic Tuscany’. Fortress towns such as Castellina and Radda look out over mile after mile of rolling, vine-clad fields, spotted with Tuscany villas. The region’s major annual festival, September’s Rassegna del Chianti Classico in Greve, celebrates the grape harvest, and signs inviting anyone on a Chianti holiday to a roadside enoteca (wine tasting canteen or shop) are a common sight. The Gothic city of Siena, south of Chianti, is the biggest hill-town of all, with a stash of Medieval art and architecture unmatched in Italy.

But Tuscany still has surprises to offer, and unknown even to many Italians. Maremma, only a two-hour drive southwest of the city of Florence is an extensive and largely undeveloped territory in stark contrast to the compact, ordered Chianti hillsides around Florence and Siena that have, until now, been the major draw for visiting wine lovers. The Maremma has great restaurants, and a treasure trove of new wineries.
