Holiday Guide

A pretty, historic town in the western Algarve, there is much to discover both in Lagos and the surrounding area. Marvel at the stunning coastal scenery and laze on the golden sands of Blue Flag beaches, then stop for lunch in one of the many waterfront restaurants serving up fresh fish. Explore the cobbled streets of Lagos’ Old Town, and then venture out to the fishing villages nearby, and experience the traditional Portuguese way of life.

Beaches

Lagos has several excellent beaches, including the lively and family friendly Meia Praia beach, where you’ll find water sports, sun loungers and umbrellas, and a good selection of beach bars and restaurants. Batata Beach is a sandy stretch overlooked by the 17th century Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, while Dona Ana Beach has postcard perfect rock formations. A little further afield, Praia de Luz has a deservedly popular Blue Flag beach.

Things to Do

Take a walk around the cobbled streets of Lagos’ Old Town, enclosed by the 16th century walls, and admire the pretty squares and churches, and then stroll down to the modern marina with plentiful shops, bars and restaurants. Try your hand at water sports on Meia Praia beach, or head to the surfers’ paradise of Sagres. A whole day can be spent in the quaint village of Salema, watching the fishermen bring in the catch of the day, lazing on the Blue Flag beach, and helping little ones hunt for dinosaur footprints

Eating and Drinking

Restaurants and cafes in Lagos cater for both Portuguese and international tastes. You will find waterfront restaurants offering grilled fish and seafood on the menu, and traditional Portuguese restaurants serving fish stews cooked in a cataplana (copper pot). Main courses can be big, so do not be afraid to share or ask for a half portion. Head inland towards Monchique to try spicy chouriça sausages and pork stews with beans, and make sure you sample some local red or white wine from Lagos or Alvor.

Nightlife and Entertainment

The nightlife in Lagos is buzzing, with trendy cocktail bars, live music venues and late night dancing in abundance. Whether you want to relax with a glass of wine and a waterfront view, or dance on the beach until the early hours, you’ll find something that entertains. For a change of scenery, Albufeira’s flashy, touristy strip is less than an hour away, and chilled out beach bars can be found all along the coast.
